עתידות | 'Atitot | The Future (1912)

Artist: Abraham Zvi Idelsohn (1882-1938)

Lyrics: Yaakov Cohen

Tune: Ben-Yehuda

This text was published first in Kinor Zion [Zion's Violin] (1900), following the death of Binyamin Zev Herzl (1860-1904), the founder of political Zionism. Yaakov Cohen also included it in the second volume of his anthology Sefer-Ha-Shirim (Warsaw: 1905, p.47)

“'Atitot” conveys a longing for Zion and expresses the hope that the Jewish people will return to their homeland and build a new, free nation there.

The melody, composed by Idelsohn (Ben-Yehuda), is divided into three sections: A B A.  The first one is in E minor; the second in E major, with an augmented second in bar 29 that leads to the third section, which repeats the first section in E major.
