“Shir hayal katon” is based on the work Soldatenlied [Soldier's Song] by Hoffman von Fallersleben (1798-1874), composed by Robert Schumann (1810-1856) as song no. 7 without an opus number.

The song tells of a boy who imagines himself as a brave soldier. All at once, he hears his father call: "leave everything my hero, go to bed!".

The melody is in a major key.
