הגדים והכלב | Ha-gdayim ve-ha-kelev | The Kids and the Dog (1912)
Artist: Abraham Zvi Idelsohn (1882-1938)
Lyrics: From Ha-Zamir
Tune: Miller
The text of “Ha-gdayim ve-ha-kelev” were published in Ha-Zamir (Odessa, 1903: p. 19), with instructions which Idelsohn omitted in Sefer Ha-Shirim.
In the song, baby goats bleat: "me, me"; two of them leave the flock, run to the garden and get stuck in the bushes. A dog comes barking: "how, how", and the singer warns him to be careful because he is one against many.
The melody was written by a composer identified only as “Miller”. Noah Pines included a few other songs about animals by this author in Ha-Zamir. One of them is “He-hatul ve ha-akhbar” [The Cat and the Mouse] (Odessa, 1903: p. 18), which may be a translation of a German folk song by Wenzel Müller (1767-1835). Alternatively, “He-hatul ve ha-akhbar” may have been inspired by a work written by the German composer August Eberhard Müller (1767-1817).
The melody is in a major key.
