נגינת החרף | Neginat ha-horef | Winter Tune (1912)
Artist: Abraham Zvi Idelsohn (1882-1938)
Lyrics: M.Z. Mane (Translator)
Tune: Felix Mendelsohn
This work is a Hebrew translation of the German song "Winterlied" [Winter Song], composed by Felix Mendelsohn, for voice and piano Op. 19 no. 3. The source text is a Swedish folksong. The song received a Yiddish translation and several Hebrew translations; Idelsohn chose Mordecai Zwi Mane's translation work.
“Neginat ha-horef” presents a dialogue between a mother and son. The boy begs for permission to search the forest for his lost sister. When the mother refuses, he goes without her blessing. The song ends with the mother awaiting the return of both her children.
The melody is in a minor key.
