שיבת-ציון | Shivat tsiyon | Return to Zion (1912)
Artist: Abraham Zvi Idelsohn (1882-1938)
Lyrics: Elyakum Zunser (1836-1913)
Tune: Elyakum Zunser (1836-1913)
This song was written by Elyakum Zunser (1836-1913) between 1882 and 1884, and translated to Hebrew in 1901. This is the third song by Zunser translated to Hebrew that Idelsohn included in Sefer Ha-Shirim (see above, songs no. 66 and no. 75).
“Shivat tsiyon” speaks about the return of the sons of the people of Israel to their mother, the land of Zion. In the song, the returnees are likened to small creeks that eventually form a river. The return to Zion will bring joy and end the mourning of the Jewish people in exile.
The melody, which is in a minor key, is in the style of a Yiddish Eastern European song.
