This piece was composed by the cantor-composer Louis Lewandowsky (1823-1894) and published in the second volume of Lewandowsky's book of compositions for the synagogue, Todah W'simrah [Gratitude and Song] (Berlin, 1876: no. 20 p. 42.)
Lewandowsky worked in the liberal synagogue in Berlin and published his music at the end of the nineteenth century. His main cantorial work was published in two volumes: Todah W'simrah (Berlin, 1876) for the Sabbath, for solo and a four-voice choir with or without an organ accompaniment; and Festgesange [Holiday Songs] (Berlin, 1876) for the festivals, also for solo and choir. Lewandowsky published other compositions as well, but these two were well-known and used by most Ashkenazi cantors.
“Be-tset Yisrael mi-mitsrayim”, which praises God for taking the Israelites out of Egypt, is recited on Passover. It is set for a four-voice choir, in a minor key.
