Artist: Abraham Zvi Idelsohn (1882-1938)

Lyrics: From Psalm 144: 3,4; 90:6; 90:3; 37:37; 34: 23.

Tune: Hirsch Goldberg (1807-1893)

This piece speaks about the temporality of humans and the eternality of God. It was composed and published by Hirsch Goldberg (1807-1893), a cantor in Braunschweig Germany who modernized the performance of song in the liberal Jewish synagogue. The work was published in Gesänge für Synagogen [Songs for the Synagogue] (Braunschweig, 1843: p. 53). “Adonay ma adam” is traditionally sung on Yom Kippur as part of the memorial service for the dead (yizkor).
